Commision: Torn Paper wall Mural, DHSVAD 2015
ILarge bands of overlapping colour are delineated and accentuated with a torn edge that separates each stripe signifying the beginnings of disorder. ‘Torn paper’ is proposed as a reflection a 'piece' in the school grounds at Dulwich High school of Visual Arts and Design, Dulwich Hill where I was a teacher. Also the school is the location of Seaview Gallery, an exhibiting space for the community. I envision this proposal would link the cultural spaces of the school to the site of the Artseat and the environs. The intensely and brightly coloured composition of enlarged torn paper strips comments on a fundamental human concern- our futile struggle against entropy. The composition was derived from my practice of using slabs of posters harvested from walls and hoardings to utilise as a canvas. By cutting and tearing into them I reveal and activate the built up layers to create alternative imagery. THis work was realised with the assistance of Tom Mcdonald.
