consumer robustas : poster/ acrylic and collage/ pastel/ OIL ON PANEL
YOYEURLarger than life-size this imposing figures’ form is created through a combination of collage and de-collage. Large slabs of posters (exhausted public narratives) are used as both figure and ground. Not only does the figure sit on the surface but it is also realized by cutting into the dense layers revealing rich colours and patterns that lie beneath.
ABUNDANCEThis large, weighty work is again a combination of collage and de-collage. By cutting into the thick slab of posters, the ample figure, her burgeoning bloom of bursting shopping bags, framing her plump child in the stroller, are integrated into the ground in a way not possible to achieve in conventional painting.
BLEACHEDIn this work the voluminous form of the figure is bleached? Corrupted by the strong sun. Her dress is in danger of disappearing , only defined through the sharp shadows in the pleats which allow the intricate pattern and flicks of colour to appear. The substantial become ephemeral.
CACOPHONYThe use of a thin layer of gesso to unify the surface, evident in some works is not employed in Cacophony where the original posters’ messages and the loud, brash figure battle for supremacy. Figure and ground advance and retreat, emeshed in each other; layers punctured by pattern to reveal hidden depths, hinting at others which might emerge. The protagonist caught at the point of or being absorbed by her environment, the likely outcome is ambiguous
